<image:title>BLOG - New Year’s Intentions for Mental Wellbeing - FIND FORMS OF MOVEMENT THAT BRING YOU JOY It’s no secret that exercise can be a great stress reliever. But that doesn’t mean you need to set a weight loss goal or join a gym to reap the benefits. Focus more on finding movement that brings you joy and nourishment. You are far more likely to incorporate joyful movement into your regular routine than an activity that feels like a chore. Make an effort to try different things until you find what works for you: outdoor yoga, hiking, living room dance parties, gardening. The list goes on!</image:title>

Practitioners know the specific points to target with acupuncture that will stimulate the nervous system and regulate the body's stress response, lowers cortisol levels, and improves overall emotional well-being. Certain herbal formulas are also prescribed to promote calm in the body.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - How Dieting Affects Our Hormones - WE LIVE IN DIET CULTURE</image:title>
<image:caption>It seems like everywhere you go someone is talking about dieting or the pursuit of weight loss in some form. According to the CD 49.1% of adults in the U.S. had been on a diet in the last year. And not surprisingly, about 35% of dieting becomes obsessive and 20-25% of those that diet will develop an eating disorder. While diets may seem so normalized today, restricting our nutritional intake can put a tremendous amount of stress on our bodies. Eating less than what your body needs can negatively impact our hormones responsible for metabolism, mood, energy, hunger and satiety and reproductive health. Many of the therapists at East Side Therapy specialize in eating disorder recovery and can work with you, alongside a registered dietitian, to address these concerns before they take a real toll on your health.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - How Dieting Affects Our Hormones - THYROID and METABOLISM When dieting we might feel a burst of energy and hope at first, but then that turns into feeling more sluggish and wiped out. Our thyroid and metabolism are also greatly affected by dieting. The thyroid hormones, T3 and T4, regulate our metabolic rate. When we restrict, the body adapts by producing less of these hormones, therefore slowing down our metabolism. Suppressed thyroid function can result in fatigue, weight gain, depression, hair loss, dry skin, menstrual irregularities and constipation.</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - How ADHD Affects Romantic Partnerships - IS ADHD IMPACTING YOUR RELATIONSHIP?</image:title>
<image:caption>Some hints that ADHD might be affecting your relationship: Responsibilities feel uneven Inability to discuss unmet expectations without arguing Arguments get stuck on whose memory is right Feeling that screens (phones, iPads, TV) are more important than the relationship Poor follow through on tasks Infrequent or non-existent sex life Parenting struggles with a good cop/bad cop dynamic Constant arguing over seemingly inconsequential topics The partner without ADHD often feels angry, frustrated, sad and disappointed – why does my partner have to be constantly reminded to get anything done?! They overcompensate, wanting to help but often left feeling overburdened. The ADHD partner often feels worthless, resentful, sad and disappointed in themselves – how can my partner expect me to respond when they talk to me like that?! They begin walking on eggshells, waiting for the next time they let their partner down.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - How ADHD Affects Romantic Partnerships - A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER</image:title>
<image:caption>There is no “I” in team. If one partner is constantly being blamed, change can’t happen. Both partners must recognize their role and focus on changing themselves and not their partner. Be kind. Patterns cannot be broken overnight. Consider medication. ADHD is linked to imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain, similar to how insulin is dysregulated in a person with diabetes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As we navigate the journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, it’s crucial to practice self-compassion - but this can feel intimidating or scary if self-compassion is new for you. Self-compassion can look like treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer a friend. Reserving our self-judgement allows us a moment to pause and respond differently, and more aligned with how we’d like to view ourselves. Self-compassion helps us embrace our imperfections, lovingly give ourselves space to grow, and find connection in our shared humanity.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Why Are Pronouns So Important? The Answer Is Safety, Not Grammar… - PRONOUNS GIVE US CONTEXT English, like many languages, attaches cultural connotations to the words we use, especially when it comes to gender. The words we choose have both a literal meaning and a contextual association that tell the listener how we are framing a concept and how we feel about it. When we use a pronoun to refer to a person, we are telling them what set of gender role assumptions we are attributing to them, whether we mean to or not. In fact, our word choice not only affects how the other person receives our message but also affects how we process the information in our own minds.</image:title>
<image:caption>The concept of linguistic relativity, often dubbed the “Whorfian hypothesis,” suggests the words we use affect our perception through association. Even if you aren’t intending to misgender someone or minimize their identity, using the wrong pronouns can make your mind reframe that person within a set of inaccurate assumptions. This leads to misunderstanding, which will lead to confusion for you and invalidation of the other person. In short, the assumptions you are communicating through your choice of pronoun use are what can hurt others.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Why Are Pronouns So Important? The Answer Is Safety, Not Grammar… - Language is organic and evolves as we do. As we move towards greater acceptance of others, altering the way we use language helps us update the way we think so we can all feel safer and more connected while we grow as a community. Next time you feel frustrated by pronoun use, remember: the conversation about pronoun use is about SAFETY and understanding, not grammar!</image:title>
